Wednesday 2/14/18
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, AZ - is just 7 miles off the Mexico border. The Organ Pipe type of cactus found here in the US are the most northern of their type. The cactus grow 40 to 50 feet high and live upwards of 200 years.

We took at 21 mile dirt loop road through desert and mountain terrain. Very cool but bumpy ride and the sights along the way.

Note the picture of the two arches at the top of the AJO (pronounced AH-O) Mountain.  Today also brought a light all day rain but brought much excitement in AZ. No rain here according to one of the locals since Sept 2017. That is dry even for this area.

We passed through the town of AJO founded in the 1890's as a mining town , copper. The center of town was a throw back to the 20's. We drove up to the Copper Mine overlook for an amazing view. The mine is 1100 feet deep and 1.5 miles across. The mine was finally shut down in 1985. I have no idea what these people do for a living as it is 50 miles to any major road. Maybe they are all Border Guards now??
