4/25/18 Grand Canyon - As if riding mules wasn't enough adventure for Matt and Sammy, today we hiked (on foot) a portion of the Bright Angel Trail to the second tunnel, about 1.6 miles and an elevation change of 700 ft. Of course now Wendy and I can claim we hiked the Grand Canyon. It was a picture perfect day, low 70's and not at all windy.

Views from the start of the B.A.T.

Important instructions given since the path is so narrow.
We did come across pack mules headed back from trail maintenance. There are no magic tricks to the maintenance of the trail or the resupply of the Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon; all by mule power.
All smiles on the way down.

                                                                      1st tunnel
2nd tunnel about 3/4 mile and 700 ft straight down.

Walk back up. Note the smiles are starting to disappear.

Of course whenever you hike ice cream is a necessary food to replenish your energy.
Next up was the Kaibab Trail. Matt and Sammy took the Bright Angel trail down on the mules the 1st day and then Kaibab back up the following day.

Very steep switchbacks

A rim walk topped off the day.
                                                            Matt pushing the edge!

Best little hiker! Hiked the Bright Angel trail, the South Kaibab trail and the rim trail- all in one day.

  1. We did that Kaibab Trail part-way, too, and it is beautiful and challenging. Great time with those kids, too!
