3/14/18 -  We continued to see the sights of the Northern Redwoods. The Elk herd that was here yesterday and surrounded the camper were no where to be seen in the morning. Another trip was needed to deal with a noise in the front wheels of the truck as well as an oil change. So far we have traveled 7,500 miles and 3,400 since we reached California.With the California miles alone we could have driven back home! Lots to see.

While waiting for the truck repair we toured Eureka a town known for its Victorian homes built in the gilded age (1890's). The house below was built in 1885 by William Carson a lumber tycoon. The home was  a mere 14,000 square feet with a 100 feet tall tower. The building is now a private club , not open to the public. I can't imagine the cost to maintain a 163 year old wooden structure. Paint alone outside would cost a fortune.

 The house below was built by Carson for his son upon is marriage.Not a bad deal for the son. The new owners of the house painted it pink and named it "Pink Lady". It is available as an Airbnb.

 This home is a converted Firehouse that was originally constructed at the turn of the century and built adjacent to the Carson home. I'm sure it was intended to provide protection for the Carson mansion.

 Eureka's town harbor included a monument to the Seafarers with a fairly lengthy list of individuals who were lost to the sea.

Nice hike to a water falls and the redwood forest. Interesting new tidbit - By the turn of the century only 4% of the original redwood forest remains. The protection of the forest in the 20's should hopefully preserve the forest for the future.

Wendy thought it would be funny to sneak up on me while I was trying to setup a self timed picture and as you can see I was surprised. The timer on the camer just happened to go off and capture the deed.
