3/22/18 - Travel day from Tahoe to Zion NP. The trip started out well heading away from the Tahoe mountains beating the next snow storm towards Reno, NV. Very quickly we went from snow to desert in the High Serra desert/mountains. However, the bad weather followed us into Nevada and Utah.

This northern area of Nevada is pretty barren desert and salt flats with snow capped mountains off in the distance. Apparently million or so years ago this area was under a 1,000 feet of water. Now all that remains is the salt.

We stopped at a rest stop unknowingly right at the Bonneville Salt Flats race course where the land speed record was first set in 1935 by Sir Malcolm Campbell at 301 miles per hour. The last record was set in 1970 by Gary Gabelich at 622 miles per hour in a rocket powered vehicle. It is a measured mile with the total course 10 miles long. I guess at that speed you need a little ramp room.
I gave quick thought to take the big rig out on the race course to set a record with a 5th wheel. Wendy didn't like the idea, need I say more.
Apparently it had rained/snowed quite a bit with a large area of the desert floor flooded.
We entered into Utah to a wind warning of 60 mile an hour winds. The camper is 13 feet tall and 34 feet long. It is like towing a billboard; lots of area to catch wind.
As we approached Salt lake City it really got dicey we very strong cross winds. In fact we past a tractor trailer blown over on its side and a utility trailer wrenched off the hitch from the car towing it. We cut our speed to 35 and headed for a truck stop just west of Salt Lake.
I-80 East and West was closed to trucks and trailers because of the wind so the Flying J was our camp site for the night. Wendy was still convinced we might be blown over. Not a very good nights sleep to say the least.
